Area: Gender Inequality
Place/Country: Germany
Date: Once every year
Institutions involved: Organisation by: Kompetenzzentrum Technik-Diversity-Chancengleichheit e. V.
Target group:
- Girls starting age 11 and their families
- Organisations looking for future young talents
Goals / Objectives /Aims:
The range of occupations and studies chosen by young women is still very narrow. There are more than 330 dual training occupations in Germany. However, over 50% of young women only choose one of ten apprenticeship occupations. The student statistics (Destatis) for the winter semester 2021/22 in Germany also show: 55 percent of first-year female students in their first university semester choose from only 20 subjects (out of a total of 270 subjects). Six STEM subjects make it into this top 20: biology, mathematics, computer science, architecture, chemistry and civil engineering.
Girls’ Day is an important contribution to the possible recruitment of qualified young people, especially in occupational fields with a looming shortage of skilled workers.
Content / Structure / Description including strengthening action competence
Girls’ Day is a nationwide orientation day for girls to find out about different careers and studies. They learn about professions or fields of study in which the proportion of women is less than 40 percent, e.g. in the areas of IT, crafts, natural sciences and technology. They are also able to meet female role models in leadership positions in business and politics.
Girls’ Day is sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
Results / Responses → Resulting Competences:
Girls get to know occupational fields that are “traditionally” out of the question for them.
Feedback / Evaluation of the practice:
According to the impact study of 2022, 68% of all Girls’ Day participants state that they learned about a new career field, which now interests them as a future career choice.
