Breaking Barriers in Gender and Career Development

Breaking Barriers in Gender and Career Development

Gender inequality in career development remains an important issue, with traditional gender biases and stereotypes often influencing individuals’ career choices. Regardless of progress during recent decades, gender disparities in the workplace and career advancement keep existing (Filut et al., 2017). Specifically, career choices are still heavily influenced by societal expectations and gender norms, which often prompt individuals into roles traditionally associated with their gender rather than their actual interests or potential (Bulut et al., 2023). These biases can be deeply embedded even by those providing career guidance, such as counsellors and educators (Dislere and Vronska, 2020).

An important milestone in the Guide Project is the development of an online training programme in Gender-Sensitive Career Guidance. This programme is currently under development, and it aims to upgrade the skills of career guidance professionals, enabling them to identify and address gender stereotypes that may impact career choices. The programme will include modules that focus on identifying gender stereotypes, implementing gender -sensitive approaches and utilizing gender-sensitive tools.

As the Guide Project progresses, the partnership is committed to making a lasting impact on the field of career guidance. We invite career counsellors, educators, and all those involved in career guidance to join us in this important journey.

Stay tuned for further updates on the development of the online training programme and other resources from the Guide Project. Together, we can break down the barriers of gender inequality and ensure that every individual can pursue a fulfilling and rewarding career path.
